Add-on acquisition

An add-on acquisition is a smaller company a private equity firm buys to combine with an existing portfolio company, building scale under a single platform.

Add-ons — sometimes called bolt-ons — are the engine of the buy-and-build strategy. A sponsor acquires a platform, then bolts on complementary businesses to expand capabilities, geography, or market share before an eventual exit. Each add-on is a buy-side transaction in its own right.

Every add-on raises a branding question: does the acquired company keep its identity, or fold into the platform's? Getting that decision and its timing right is what pe portfolio company branding is about. For private equity firms running active roll-ups, a repeatable approach to integrating sponsor-backed businesses digitally keeps the platform coherent as it grows.
